Sales Assistant (10 hours per week)
The Retail section consists of more than 450 Barnardo's shops across the UK. These high-street stores are reliant on donations from the public and corporate supporters, and generate funds from the sale of these donated items. There are a wide range of shops, from traditional charity stores to book shops and furniture. The Trading division produces and sells a range of products, including cards and gifts.
Assist the Branch Retail Manager and or Branch Retail Deputy Manager in the running of the shop. (There may also be occasions where there will be a requirement to run the shop in the absence of the Branch Retail Manager and Branch Retail Deputy Manager). Ensure that your actions reinforce the Barnardo's Basis and Values.
Duties include:
o Ensuring stock is generated over the door by members of the public and ensuring donors sign up to the Gift Aid scheme.
o Ensuring all the stock is sorted, priced, and steamed before going on the shop floor.
o The use of IT (computer) on a daily basis.
SALES
o Achieve maximum sales at all times.
o Ensure that the high standard of service to customers that is expected by Barnardo's is maintained at all times.
o Implement any promotion in the shop as directed by Head Office or your Area Business Manager or line manager.
o Actively support any national fundraising promotions as directed by Head Office or your Area Business Manager or line manager.
SHOP APPEARANCE
o Maintain a high standard of display, both in the windows and internally.
o Achieve and maintain high standards of housekeeping, organisation and cleanliness throughout the branch premises.
STOCK
o Encourage the public to donate saleable goods.
o Actively support the branch in achieving the required Gift Aid conversion rate.
o Adhere to Gift Aid procedure when processing Gift Aided donations.
o Price stock at a consistent level in accordance with Barnardo's price guides.
o Ensure the stock density is kept full by ensuring there is adequate stock available at all times. (Productivity)
o Rotate stock on a daily basis so that no garment remains on the shop floor for any longer than the agreed time limits.
o Hang, ticket, size and cube all clothing as appropriate.
o The role will demand moving sometimes high volumes of stock on a daily basis.
o Comply with all instructions regarding the sale and auditing of New Goods.
STAFF
o Promote a happy working environment and to increase efficiency and job satisfaction.
o Assist in the recruitment and training of volunteers. (All stores except Department Stores.)
ADMINISTRATION AND SECURITY
o Complete all administrative paperwork such as sales sheets, Gift Aid Sheets and stock control sheets correctly and promptly.
o Bank daily according to Barnardo's policy.
o Ensure that all Barnardo's till procedures are adhered to and that cash is kept secure.
o Be the second named key holder with the Police.
o Notify a senior member of staff in the event of suspected theft or dishonesty by any member of staff.
o Ensure that no unauthorised person is allowed to inspect the shop or to examine sales or other records.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
o Comply with all Health and Safety (H&S) regulations as per Barnardo's H&S policy.
o Report any maintenance or Health and Safety issues in the shop to the Branch Retail Manager or line manager.
oNB This role involves continuous manual handling of stock, in volume on a daily basis. It will require a reasonable level of fitness and exertion, including carrying stock up and down stairs on aregular basis.
OTHER
o Any other duties as appropriate.
All criteria are essential unless otherwise denoted.
EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE
o No formal qualifications required.
o Numeracy, e.g. till operation, basic cash reconciliation, stock control of new goods.
o Literacy, e.g. basic written report.
EXPERIENCE
o Retail experience in a busy branch environment (e.g. display work, stock presentation, customer service, selling, good housekeeping).
o Fashion retail experience in a busy branch environment, e.g. display work, stock presentation, customer service, selling, good housekeeping. (Department Store only.)

CIRCUMSTANCES
o Willing to cover staff absences such as annual leave, sickness etc.
o Willing to work Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.
o Willing to attend trainingcourses and meetings which may require travelling and occasional overnight stays (expenses will be paid).
o There will be a need to lift, on a frequent basis, items of various sizes and weights.
HOURS
o All full time shop based positions are 40 hours per week. All full time Area Business Manager,Area VanDriver, Driver and Organiser, and Van Porter positions are 36.25 hours per week. If the post you are applying for is less than the full time hours, the rate of pay will be pro-rated accordingly.
